Ortiz goes hitless in final game of career

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

David Ortiz did not get many chances to make a statement in the final game of his career, as the Boston Red Sox slugger finished Monday's 4-3 loss against the Cleveland Indians 0-for-1 at the plate with two walks and an RBI before being removed for a pinch runner in the eighth inning.

Papi did manage to make a bit of noise in the contest, though, when his sacrifice fly in the sixth inning plated Dustin Pedroia, bringing the Red Sox to within two runs and tying the slugger with Derek Jeter for the fourth-most career postseason RBIs with 61.

After earning a walk in the eighth inning and later making it to second base, Ortiz was lifted for pinch runner Marco Martinez with the Red Sox in need of one run to tie the game. As was custom Monday, Ortiz received a standing ovation from the crowd at Fenway Park as he left the final game of his MLB career:
