Cubs win most games since 1945 and tie Wrigley record
The Chicago Cubs' magical season continued with yet another win Friday as they shut out NL Central counterparts the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0.
Thanks to a dominant pitching performance from right-hander Jake Arrieta - who tossed seven innings of shutout ball, which included 10 strikeouts - the Cubs earned their 98th victory of the season, hitting the mark for the first time since 1945, while also tying a franchise record for wins at Wrigley Field with 56.
Chicago's 98-55 record is the best in baseball, and their 56 wins at home is tops around the league as well.
They will clinch home-field advantage in the National League portion of the postseason if the Washington Nationals lose at PNC Park tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Cubs have already clinched a playoff spot - the only team in baseball to do so thus far.
