A-Rod sits again Wednesday at Fenway

Much to the chagrin of those chanting "We Want A-Rod" at Fenway Park on Tuesday night, New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi omitted the soon-to-be-released 41-year-old from the lineup for Wednesday's clash against the Boston Red Sox, too.

Gary Sanchez, the 23-year-old catching prospect hitting .263 with three doubles since being recalled Aug. 3, will serve as the designated hitter in lieu of Alex Rodriguez against left-hander Drew Pomeranz.

Stoic on the bench in Tuesday's 5-2 loss as Red Sox fans lobbied Girardi to let him pinch hit, Rodriguez was candid with reporters about his disappointment in being left out of the lineup, especially after Girardi said the three-time MVP could appear in each of the last four games leading up to his release.

"It's surprising and shocking," Rodriguez said. "He has his opinion and I have mine. But as I've said since I came back from my suspension, it's up to Joe, and I'll definitely do what he wants."

Rodriguez is expected to transition into an advisory role with the Yankees following Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He's hit just .132 over his last 15 games, with one home run in 77 plate appearances since June 19.

"I came to the stadium hoping to play all three games, maybe two out of three," Rodriguez said. "(Girardi) just said, 'We're trying to win games.'"
