Hector Olivera doesn't appear to have a future with the San Diego Padres, as the suspended outfielder - acquired from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Matt Kemp and cash considerations on Saturday - will be designated for assignment when he is reinstated from the restricted list next week, reports Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.

Though Olivera is eligible to return from his 82-game suspension Tuesday, the 31-year-old will instead be removed from the Padres' 40-man roster, and the club will then have 10 days to either trade him, release him, or outright him to the minor leagues. If the Padres decide to release Olivera, they will be responsible for the $28.5 million left on his contract (the Los Angeles Dodgers, who signed Olivera to a six-year, $62.5-million deal last May, agreed to cover almost $30 million when they traded him to Atlanta a year ago.)

Olivera, who made his MLB debut with the Braves last September following a decorated career in Cuba's Serie Nacional, was arrested April 13 and charged with misdemeanor assault and battery for an alleged domestic dispute at a Virginia hotel. On May 26, following an investigation by Major League Baseball, Olivera agreed to an 82-game suspension, the largest penalty handed out by commissioner Rob Manfred under the league's new domestic violence policy.

Olivera has managed a .674 OPS in his brief MLB career, collecting two home runs with a 0.35 walk-to-strikeout ratio in 30 games with the Braves.
