Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ryan Vogelsong was carted off the field Monday after being struck in the face by a Jordan Lyles fastball in the second inning.

Vogelsong was hit during his first plate appearance in the game against the Colorado Rockies. With the bases loaded and one out, the Pirates, who would typically give their pitcher the bunt sign, were forced to play out the at-bat.

He was struck by an 0-2 fastball, and instantly went down. Training staff sprinted out to assist him, and he was able to stand up under his own power before being carted off with a towel covering his left eye.

Head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk told MLB.com's Adam Berry the injury was to the "eye itself," including the orbital bone around it.

The 38-year-old Vogelsong was admitted to Allegheny General Hospital for evaluation. More details about his status will be released Tuesday.
