Top pitching prospects have mixed results in debuts

Michael Fulmer and Sean Manaea will both remember their big-league debuts, but for very different reasons.

Fulmer, the Detroit Tigers' top prospect, who was acquired from the Mets for Yoenis Cespedes, dazzled over five innings in his highly anticipated debut against the Minnesota Twins on Friday. Helped by a three-run first inning before he even took the mound, the 23-year-old allowed just two runs and struck out four to earn his first career win.

"We got a team 'W' and you can't argue with a three-run head start before you even take the mound, so I was very pleased with the way it went," Fulmer told ESPN's Katie Strang. "I'm just really on top of the world right now."

It was a different story for Manaea, however, who was opening up his major-league career with the Oakland Athletics. Though he struck out three, he couldn't get an out in the sixth inning, and was eventually torched for three Houston Astros runs in the frame - two of which scored after Sean Doolittle relieved him.

Although the 24-year-old wished his personal line looked better, first baseman Yonder Alonso let Manaea off the hook by smacking a three-run walk-off homer.

"That was a really awesome way to get welcomed to the bigs," Manaea told reporters about watching Alonso's blast. "That was an unreal experience."
