The Friars lost, 9-4, at home to the Dodgers last night, snapping their three-game winning streak in the process. San Diego needs one win in this series to avoid a last-place finish in the NL West for the first time since 2011.

Arizona lost, 5-3, to Washington at Nationals Park last night, splitting four games with the Nats, and dropping to 4-9 in their last 13 games overall. The D-backs have a series record of 4-1-2 at Chase Field since August 5.

The Padres have taken nine of 16 meetings with the D-backs this season, and need one more victory to take the season series with Arizona for the second straight year. Dating to the beginning of 2015, San Diego and Arizona have split the last 16 games at Chase Field.

Edwin Jackson went 6.0 innings and allowed just two runs (both earned) a week ago vs. the Giants, earning the victory, and improving to 2-1 with a 4.63 ERA in four starts this month. Jackson is 2-4 with a 4.83 ERA in nine career starts vs. the D-backs.

Braden Shipley allowed two runs (both earned) in 6.0 IP last Sunday vs. the Orioles, but it wasn't enough, and he dropped his second straight outing. Shipley is 0-2 with an 8.68 ERA in two career starts against the Padres.

Hunter Renfroe went 5-for-13 (.385 BA) with three home runs and 11 RBI in the Padres' latest three-game matchup with the Dodgers. Including Renfroe's four bombs in his first eight career games, San Diego rookies have gone deep a total of 39 times in 2016 -- fourth most in MLB.

PHOENIX (AP)  Archie Bradley liked his strong finish to the season.
The Diamondbacks right-hander struck out a career high 11, tying the club's rookie franchise record for a single game in Arizona's 9-5 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.
