By going 9-3 against the Brewers this season, the Cardinals have improved to 48-21 versus Milwaukee since the beginning of 2013. The 48 victories are the most by any National League team against a single opponent over that span.

The Cardinals have hit home runs in each of their last 17 games, tripling the next-longest active streaks (five each by the Brewers and Rockies). The streak is two shy of the longest in Cardinals history (19 straight in July 2006).

The Brewers lost all four games to the Pirates this weekend as Milwaukee suffered its first four-game home sweep of 2016. The four straight defeats came immediately on the heels of a four-game winning streak.

Carlos Martinez has pitched very well against the Brewers over the past two seasons, when he's gone 3-0 with a 0.64 ERA. Martinez has struck out 36 to go along with eight walks and just one home run over 28.1 innings versus Milwaukee (since 2015).

Jeff Gyorko leads all National Leaguers with 15 home runs since July 18. For the season overall, Gyorko is averaging 13.5 at-bats per home run, second only to teammate Brandon Moss (12.6) among National Leaguers with at least 250 plate appearances.

Jonathan Villar has been playing third base this month, but with 31 doubles, 11 homers and 50 stolen bases in 2016, he's just the fourth shortstop since 1900 (based on primary position in season) to total at least 30, 10 and 50, respectively, in a single year. Villar joins Honus Wagner, Jose Reyes (three times) and Hanley Ramirez (twice) among shortstops.

MILWAUKEE -- Craig Counsell knows the Milwaukee Brewers are close to snapping out of their recent funk but when you're playing some of the better teams in the league, close is hardly enough.
Each loss during Milwaukee's current six-game losing streak has come by three runs or less with three of them settled by a one-run margin, including the last two to St. Louis.

MILWAUKEE (AP)  Zach Duke retired the only batter he faced, birthday boy Adam Wainwright turned the page on a disappointing year and the St. Louis Cardinals strengthened their hold on the final NL wild-card spot.
Duke stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout in the 10th inning after Randal Grichuk hit an RBI single in the top half of the inning, lifting the Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Tuesday night.
