Baltimore leads the all-time series with the Nationals, 39-32, including a 33-23 edge since they moved to Washington in 2005. This is their first series meeting of 2016.

This is just the third time in franchise history that the Nationals have been in first place through 123 games in any season; they were 6.0 games up through 123 games in 2014 and 7.0 games ahead in 2012. They went on to win the division in both of those seasons.

WASHINGTON (AP)  The Washington Nationals comfortably lead the NL East, but after losing four straight games, they needed a win. Good thing it was Max Scherzer's turn in the rotation.
Scherzer allowed two hits over eight innings and Bryce Harper's two-run double helped the Nationals avoid a four-game home-and-home sweep with a 4-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night.
