The Giants are an MLB-worst 2-10 since the All-Star break. A year ago it was much the opposite -- SF went 10-2 to start the second half, moving within a half game of the NL West lead. However, last year's Giants lost eight of their next 12 games and ultimately fell out of playoff contention.

The Nats have a plus-113 run differential this season; the Cubs, at plus-155, are the only other club that has outscored its opposition by at least 100 runs. In Expos/Nationals history, only four times has the team finished a season with a run differential of plus-100 or better: 2012 (+137), 1994 (+131 in a shortened season), 2014 (+131) and 1979 (+120).

Last month, Brandon Belt hit .320 with 13 doubles, five homers, 17 RBI and a .984 OPS. In July, Belt's numbers are down to a .224 average (17-for-76) with two doubles, one homer, seven RBI and a .708 OPS.

Bryce Harper's RBI on Thursday was his first in six games, and just his third in his last 15 road games. After producing six homers and 14 RBI in his first nine road games of 2016, Harper has four homers and 14 RBI in his last 40 contests away from home, during which he is hitting .220.

Max Scherzer ranks second among MLB qualifiers with a strikeout rate of 11.50 per nine innings, trailing only the 13.18 whiffs per nine of Miami's Jose Fernandez. Scherzer is also allowing home runs at a rate of 1.40 per nine innings. In MLB history, no qualifying pitcher has ever finished a season allowing 1.4-plus homers per nine innings while fanning at least 11 hitters per nine.

In 33 starts in 2014, Jeff Samardzija had a 2.73 first-inning ERA, with 27 strikeouts and three walks in the opening inning. In the last two seasons, he has struggled to a 6.58 first-inning ERA (38 earned runs in 52.0 innings), with 42 strikeouts and 19 bases on balls.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Two teams being cautious with injured players, getting acquainted with new ones and perhaps still shopping for upgrades, will hook up for a fourth time in four days on Sunday when the Washington Nationals take on the San Francisco Giants.
The Nationals have won two of the first three in the battle of National League division leaders, but the Giants are the ones coming off a 5-3 win Saturday.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)  The Washington Nationals made history by turning the first 3-3-5 triple play ever in the major leagues then watched as third baseman Anthony Rendon tossed the ball from the milestone moment into the crowd at AT&T Park.
Getting a second straight win over the Giants and securing their hold on the second-best record in baseball was far more important than the souvenir to manager Dusty Baker and his ballclub.
