The Mariners were crushed, 10-1, by the Pirates at PNC Park on Wednesday, splitting the two-game series. Since opening the season 28-18, Seattle has gone just 23-31, and dropped from first place to third, 6.0 games back in the AL West.

The Cubs beat the White Sox, 3-1, at Wrigley Field to take two games there after dropping two at U.S. Cellular. Aroldis Chapman recorded his first save as a Cub in the win, as Chicago improved on the best record in baseball (61-40).

This is only the Mariners' second-ever trip to Wrigley Field. The teams played a three-game set there in 2007, with the eventual NL Central-winning Cubs taking two out of three.

Hisashi Iwakuma had a strong start Saturday against the Blue Jays, allowing just two runs in 6.0 innings and picking up the win in Toronto. In his last five starts, Iwakuma is 5-0 with a 2.51 ERA, going at least 6.0 innings in each start.

Jon Lester allowed four runs (all earned) in 4.0 innings on Sunday against the Brewers in Milwaukee, but got a no-decision after the Cubs came back to win the game. Lester has started 12 games in his career against the Mariners, going 5-4 with a 3.52 ERA.

In his two appearances with the Cubs, Aroldis Chapman has thrown 39 pitches. 34 have been fastballs, with an average velocity of 101.0 MPH.

CHICAGO -- Once a highly touted prospect, left-hander Brian Matusz found himself out the big leagues -- and out of a job -- in mid-June after he was traded by Baltimore and released by Atlanta.
That's when the Chicago Cubs called to offer Matusz a minor-league deal. Six weeks later, the 29-year-old southpaw will make his Cubs debut on national television Sunday night in a rubber match against the Seattle Mariners.

CHICAGO (AP)  Jon Lester felt better Friday, after some rough outings. He knows he wasn't perfect in six shutout innings. A pair of ''pointless, useless walks,'' as he put it, still bothered him afterward.
Not that they mattered, in the end.
