The Mets lost to the Cubs, 6-2, on Wednesday in the rubber match at Wrigley Field. The three-game set against Miami concludes a nine-game road trip that has seen the Mets go 3-3 so far.

The Marlins beat the Phillies, 9-3, at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday to take three of four in the series. Miami is now 8-2 in their last 10, vaulting them into sole possession of the second Wild Card spot in the NL, just one game behind the Dodgers.

The Mets lead the season series 5-4, including taking two of three in Miami in early June. They sit just 1.5 games behind the Marlins for that final Wild Card spot, making this a very important series for both teams.

Logan Verrett took the loss in Philadelphia last Saturday after allowing two runs (both earned) over 6.0 innings. Verrett has now lost six straight decisions, after opening the season with three wins. In one start and one relief appearance against Miami this year, he has shut them out in a combined 8.0 innings

Adam Conley allowed three runs (two earned) in 5.1 innings against the Cardinals in St. Louis on Sunday, getting a no-decision. Conley has not lost at home since May 22, posting a 1.07 ERA in his four starts since then. Conley faced the Mets on April 13, striking out a season-high nine batters in 6.0 shutout innings.

MIAMI (AP)  Helped by a couple of small victories against Giancarlo Stanton, Steven Matz earned a big win for the New York Mets.
Matz pitched six innings Sunday for his first win since May, twice escaping trouble by getting Stanton to ground out with a runner in scoring position, and the Mets took the rubber game of their series against Miami, 3-0.
