This is just the fifth series ever, and the first since 2013, between the Cardinals and Mariners. St. Louis has won eight of the 12 games in the head-to-head series all-time, outscoring Seattle 57-37.

The Cardinals bested the Cubs on Wednesday, 7-2, finishing off the three-game sweep at Wrigley Field. St. Louis' last four series have ended in a sweep, with the Cardinals sweeping both series on the road (June 10-12 at Pittsburgh and June 20-22 at Chicago) and being swept in both series played at home (June 14-15 versus Houston and June 17-19 versus Texas).

The Mariners lost to the Tigers, 5-4, in 10 innings on Thursday, Seattle's sixth straight loss. The Mariners are now 36-37, the first time they've had a record below .500 since late April, when they sported an 8-9 record following their April 23rd road game versus the Angels.

Carlos Martinez pitched seven innings of scoreless ball while allowing just four hits and one walk when he last pitched last Saturday versus Texas. It marked the fifth straight start in which Martinez has thrown at least 100 pitches (101), averaging 106 pitches per start over that span; in his first eight starts of the season, Martinez averaged just 87.5 pitches per start.

Wade LeBlanc is scheduled to start on Friday, marking his first appearance in MLB since 2014. LeBlanc is looking to extend his active scoreless streak, as he finished the 2014 season with 17.2 scoreless innings.

Since May 30, Matt Carpenter has hit safely in 16 of 18 games played and is batting .439 with a .549 on-base percentage and .742 slugging percentage. Carpenter's batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage over that span are each the best in MLB among qualifiers.

SEATTLE -- The St. Louis Cardinals will face an American League West team for the final time in eight weeks on Sunday and the break can't come soon enough for their fans.
Saturday night's loss to the Seattle Mariners left St. Louis with a 3-7 record against AL West teams this season. The Cardinals have now lost seven in a row against teams from the division.

Mike Montgomery, Edwin Diaz and Steve Cishek combined to throw four shutout innings in relief to preserve Nathan Karns' first win ion nearly a month as Seattle hold on for a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.
