The Padres dropped a 6-3 decision to the D-backs at Chase Field yesterday, losing their second straight, and for the sixth time in the last seven games overall. San Diego is 5-3 in Game 1 of its road series this season (5-13 in all other road contests).

Seattle lost, 5-4, to Minnesota at Safeco Field on Sunday, getting swept in a three-game home series for the third time of the 2016 campaign (also swept by the A's and Angels). The M's are just 2-7 (.222) in their last nine games at Safeco Field -- the worst home mark of any AL club since May 13.

The Friars and Mariners will face off against each other four straight times beginning today, with the last two of the contests being played at Petco Park (on Wednesday and Thursday). This will be 99th all-time meeting between San Diego and Seattle (M's lead series, 52-46).

Andrew Cashner allowed three runs (all earned) in 6.0 IP last Tuesday in San Francisco, falling to 0-2 with a 5.93 ERA in three road starts this season. Today will be Cashner's first career start against the Mariners at Safeco Field.

Nathan Karns went 5.0 innings and allowed three runs (all earned) last Tuesday vs. the A's, but was saddled with a no-decision for the third time in his last four starts. Karns, who is making his first career appearance vs. the Padres today, is 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA in three home outings this year.

Seattle is 24-12 (.667) all-time on Memorial Day -- best of any active MLB franchise. The Padres are 23-25 (.479) on Memorial Day all-time (18th in MLB).

The Seattle Mariners have been perfect in interleague play so far, although it helps that they have played a pair of last-place teams.
They'll try to saddle the stumbling San Diego Padres with another loss Tuesday when they send Hisashi Iwakuma to the mound at Safeco Field.

SEATTLE (AP)  After three straight days of mediocre performances from its starting rotation, Seattle needed Nathan Karns to eat up some innings and give the Mariners relievers some rest.
Karns did his job and kept the Mariners hanging around long enough for two big innings and big home runs from Kyle Seager and Dae-Ho Lee.
