Stroman starts with a strikeout, Barney, Blue Jays top Phils

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) Toronto's Marcus Stroman struck out his first batter of spring training during a perfect first inning in the Blue Jays' 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the both teams' exhibition opener Tuesday.

Darwin Barney drove in all five runs for Toronto, going 3 for 3 with two doubles. His first-inning double gave Stroman a 2-0 lead before he took the mound.

Stroman fanned Peter Bourjos in a perfect first inning. He gave up three hits in the second, including a two-run single by Carlos Ruiz.

The 24-year-old Stroman is coming up on the anniversary of a knee injury that nearly cost him all of the 2015 season. Stroman had surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee after he got hurt while trying to get out of the way of third baseman Josh Donaldson while both attempted to field a bunt on March 10.

''My body felt unreal, knee felt great,'' said Stroman, who quickly dispatched Peter Bourjos to begin his two-inning outing. ''My arm felt pretty good today. My body is in good condition to go out there every fifth day.''

Stroman rejoined the rotation in September and went 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four starts, helping the Blue Jays win the AL East and reach the playoffs for the first time since 1993.

Stroman pitched Tuesday without a brace on his left knee.

''I don't even know where it is anymore,'' Stroman said. ''I'm good. I'm strong. I'm ready to rock.''

The first of Barney's two, two-run doubles gave Stroman a 2-0 lead before he took the mound.

Former Toronto catcher J.P. Arencibia homered and singled for the Phillies.

STARTING TIME

Phillies: RHP Severino Gonzalez hit a batter, walked one and gave up a Barney's two-run double in the first. Gonzalez, who had a 7.92 ERA in seven starts with the Phillies last season, rebounded with a 1-2-3 second inning, capped with a strikeout of Dalton Pompey.

Blue Jays: Stroman watched Cesar Hernandez leg out an infield single in the second before Carlos Ruiz's tying, two-run single.

''I wanted to face a little adversity like I did today, pitch with guys on,'' Stroman said. ''I was able to work out of the stretch, work on tempo. I've been working on my tempo a lot this spring, working on my holds and trying to vary up my delivery tempo. Just working on small things.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Phillies: OF/INF Cody Asche remains day to day with an oblique injury.

Blue Jays: 1B/DH Edwin Encarnacion had a tooth pulled Monday and was among the regulars that did not make the trip with the team.

UP NEXT: The Phillies and Blue Jays, spring training neighbors, meet again on Wednesday at Dunedin. David Buchanan will start for the Phillies while R.A. Dickey is to start for Toronto. Vincent Velasquez and Brett Oberholtzer, two of the pitchers the Phillies received in the December trade that sent Ken Giles to Houston, also are scheduled to pitch for Philadelphia.

BROKEN WINDOW: Maikel Franco hit a batting practice home run out of Bright House Field - and onto the windshield of teammate Freddy Galvis's car. When asked if he broke the window, Franco proudly replied, ''Yes sir.''
