The Tigers have never lost a series against the Padres. The Tigers won the 1984 World Series, 4-1, an interleague series in San Diego in 2003, 2-1, the next interleague series in Detroit in 2005, 3-0 and the last interleague series between the squads in San Diego in 2008, 2-1. The Tigers are 5-2 this season and four of the five wins have been by one run. Five of the Tigers' seven games this season have been decided by one run (4-1 in those games).

The Padres are 3-6 to start the year and have scored two runs or fewer in six of the nine games and just 20 runs total. The 20 runs through nine games are the Padres fewest since they scored 19 runs in the first nine games of the 1981 season.
