Report: Real Madrid retains buy-back option on Arsenal's Ozil

Reuters

Real Madrid has a clause in the transfer agreement that sent Mesut Ozil to Arsenal in 2013 that allows the La Liga club the first option to buy back the player, according to an alleged document published by a popular whistleblower website.

The contract shows that Arsenal agreed to pay an initial €44-million fee for the Germany international, plus a maximum of six separate €1-million payments every time the Gunners qualify for the Champions League group stages.

But the most revealing detail from the alleged deal is that Arsenal must first notify Madrid in the event that it receives an offer for Ozil from another Spanish club. Madrid would then have another 48 hours to decide whether to match the bid.

The option, however, wouldn't come into play if Arsenal was to sell Ozil to a club outside Spain.

"We don't discuss contracts of any of our players," an Arsenal spokesman, neither confirming nor denying the details, told Press Association.

It's just the latest of an avalanche of contracts published by Football Leaks. The same website revealed the potential £61-million fee Manchester United may end up paying for French striker Anthony Martial, as well as the world-record fee Madrid paid to Tottenham for Gareth Bale in 2013.

Football Leaks has been hailed for its transparency, but it is also reportedly accused of extorting millions of euros from sports agency Doyen Sports, a major third-party ownership group exposed for its dealings.
