John Terry signs new Chelsea contract
John Terry extended his stay at Stamford Bridge on Thursday after signing a new one-year contract with Chelsea.
With his contract set to expire in the summer, the club announced Terry will appear on the backline for at least one more season, as his new deal runs until the end of the 2015-16 campaign.
His future at the club never seemed to be in doubt, between Terry's public desire to remain with the team and Jose Mourinho's admission that a new deal was a formality.
"I'm delighted to have signed an extension to my contract with Chelsea," Terry said on the team's website.
"After adding another major trophy to my collection this month I hope myself, the players and manager can continue to bring success to our club. Playing for this great club makes me so proud. And as always I would like to thank the fans who have continually supported me."
It's been a fantastic season for the 34-year-old. Terry's been a consistent fixture in Chelsea's backline, starting in all of their Premier League and Champions League matches, including the team's Capital One Cup triumph against Tottenham where he scored and was named the Man of the Match.
"This new contract is not to say 'thank you very much;' it is because John continues to perform. He is a top defender," Mourinho explained. "I am happy that he completely deserves this new contract after a season where he has already played 40 matches."
Terry, who made his Chelsea debut in 1998, has 661 appearances to his name and has collected 13 major trophies along the way. He also holds the club record for goals scored by a defender with 63.
