Sir Bobby Charlton has company.

With an opportunistic effort off his knee against Reading in Saturday's FA Cup meeting, Wayne Rooney equalled the English icon's Manchester United scoring record, netting his 249th goal as a member of the Red Devils.

The 31-year-old Scouser has managed it in 543 matches - a whole 215 games and four seasons quicker than Charlton - to etch his name even deeper into the history of United.

Charlton could be forgiven for being sick of the sight of the Everton academy product, after the forward surpassed his goalscoring record for England of 49 with a goal against Switzerland in September of last year.

Rooney also holds the accolade for scoring the most Premier League goals for a single club - set in Jan. 2016 - and established second place in the division's all-time top scorer list earlier that month, but still sits some 66 short of Newcastle United great Alan Shearer's 260 strikes.

United strolled into a 2-0 lead shortly after Rooney's record-equalling tally, when the No. 10 found Anthony Martial who had no trouble in picking out the bottom corner.
