Southgate: There's a time and a place for beer

Gareth Southgate confirmed that Wayne Rooney will continue as his England captain since he's taken the full-time manager's gig, but he might be keeping an eye on his drink intake next time the camp reconvenes.

"There's a time to have a glass of beer or wine, but at the appropriate time and the right level," Southgate told BBC Sport at his media unveiling.

Rooney was lambasted by certain outlets in England after he was pictured looking a little inebriated in the team hotel during an allowed night off. Although his treatment has been widely deemed an overreaction, his standing as skipper and subsequent leaving of the squad due to a dubious injury did lead to questions over the Manchester United forward's professionalism.

"There is a level of expectation when you are with England," Southgate said to BBC Radio 5 Live. "We talk about pressure, we spend most of our time trying to relieve that pressure, and if we put ourselves in positions where we are going to increase the pressure, then that is not intelligent.

"It is important as a playing squad and group of staff to recognise that.

"We want to be a top team and so if we are going to do that everything has to be geared towards improving."

The ex-Middlesbrough boss will oversee his first England match as permanent gaffer in a friendly against Germany on March 22.
