Everton manager Martinez remains defiant after FA Cup heartbreak

Roberto Martinez is ready to fight for his job.

Everton's embattled manager continued to resist calls for his ousting after a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday. Despite a shaky start to their Wembley adventure, the Toffees found their feet and looked poised to take the game to extra time. But a late winner from Anthony Martial spoiled their valiant effort.

The defeat stretched Everton's winless skid to seven matches across all competitions, and many fans are hoping to part ways with Martinez as a result.

The Spaniard isn't prepared to surrender so easily, though.

"I'm so attached to Everton and my ambition is exactly the same as their ambition," he told reporters afterward. "I just share the drive that the football club has, which is getting into the Champions League and getting into situations where we can bring silverware to the football club. I'll give everything I've got to fulfill those expectations."

A 4-0 hammering at Liverpool earlier this week spelled the end of Everton's European ambitions, and supporters of both Merseyside clubs chanted against Martinez. The FA Cup was its last bastion of hope.

Even though the performance in northwest London was better than previous ones, it resulted in defeat all the same.

Martinez's three-year tenure started off well enough. He guided Everton to a record 72-point finish during the 2013-14 campaign and secured a Europa League berth. Last season saw a complete drop-off, and this term once again failed to live up to the billing. Currently in 11th place in the Premier League, Everton also dropped out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage.

"I just feel that every season we are developing and we are showing certain things that can please the fans and bring silverware that they deserve," the gaffer said. "But clearly moments like this are very disappointing and make it so hard to see the real good things that we have."
