Anthony Martial was the Wembley hero on Saturday, capitalising on the Everton defence's inability to clear the ball to steal through and send Manchester United into the FA Cup final with a last-gasp 2-1 victory.

United advances to its first FA Cup showpiece since the 2006-07 season, and incredibly it marks the first FA Cup victory for the Red Devils at Wembley since they beat Newcastle United in the final of 1999.

For Everton, the walk back down the Way will bring back painful memories for some supporters of when it lost the final to the same opponent in 1985.

Roberto Martinez's side played valiantly in the second stanza, overcoming the disappointment of Romelu Lukaku being superbly thwarted from the penalty spot by David De Gea to eventually cancel out Marouane Fellaini's earlier clipped finish. It came through unorthodox means, however: a Chris Smalling own goal.

After a stuttering first 45 minutes, the second period burst into life with controversial refereeing decisions and pulsating attacks from both sides. The penalty awarded to Everton was contentious, while Phil Jagielka also appeared to deny a second from Fellaini with his hand when desperately attempting to keep the Belgian's effort out on the ground.

In the end, it was a superb and even contest that was eked out by United. Crystal Palace and Watford will spar at the same venue on Sunday to decide who faces Louis van Gaal's outfit on May 21.
