Tottenham rallies to draw Everton

Erik Lamela scored in the 59th minute as Tottenham Hotspur rallied for a 1-1 draw with Everton on Saturday at Goodison Park.

Outplayed and sluggish for most of the first 55 minutes of this season opener, Spurs turned things up and netted the equalizer when Lamela converted a brilliant crossing pass from Kyle Walker. Tottenham had numerous chances the rest of the way, but Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg made a pair of key saves down the stretch to help the Toffees preserve the tie.

Teammate Ross Barkley ushered in the Ronald Koeman era at Everton with a bang, scoring in the fifth minute. Koeman left Southampton to replace Roberto Martinez as Everton coach this season, and looked in position to win his debut for the Merseyside club after they dictated play the entire first half and early into the second.

The Toffees registered seven shots on goal but had only Barkley's score to show for it.

Everton were without star striker Romelu Lukaku, who has been dealing with a heel injury. Lukaku ranked among the Premier League leaders with 18 goals last season.

Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris left in the 35th minute with an apparent injury. Further details were unavailable.
