Rooney scores as Man United beats Palace 2-0

LONDON (AP) Wayne Rooney produced a goal of the quality that justifies his bumper new Manchester United contract as the floundering Premier League champion won 2-0 at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The striker volleyed in United's second, shortly after Robin Van Persie's penalty, a day after ending the uncertainty over his United future by signing a new deal that will earn him more than $140 million until 2019.

Such a contract is beyond the reach of Palace, whose fans threw coins at Rooney.

Ending a three-game winless run pushed United up to sixth, but David Moyes' side is eight points from Liverpool in the fourth Champions League place having played an extra game. And Everton is only behind United on goal difference in seventh and has a game in hand.
