Report: Manchester United makes mammoth €100-million bid for Bayern Munich's Thomas Mueller

Manchester United reportedly made Bayern Munich a massive €100-million offer for the services of German international Thomas Mueller.

Mueller, 25, played under Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal at the start of his career and is open to reconnecting with his old manager, according to the Guardian. German newspaper Bild reports Manchester United submitted a €100-million bid, but Munich is not too keen on selling Mueller.

Should the deal go through, it would be the highest fee paid for a player in euros, though not by much: Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale commanded similar numbers for their respective moves to Real Madrid, at about €6 million less for Ronaldo and €9 million less for Bale.

Van Gaal hinted earlier this week at one more surprise signing but followed that up by saying the mystery player didn't necessarily have to be a striker. It seems like a pretty clear-cut statement, but Mueller has played out wide and as an attacking midfielder, and van Gaal is known to be quite clever in his wordplay, so Mueller isn't out of the realm of possibility.

The two teams struck a deal earlier in the summer transfer window, with midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger heading to Old Trafford. Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said at the time of the deal that Schweinsteiger would be the last player to depart for the Premier League club.

"I can totally reassure all the fans we will issue no further players more towards Manchester United," Rummenigge said. "The Bundesliga has to be careful not to fall further behind, I think. Anyone who follows the transfer market at the moment, within which English clubs work, knows their clubs are being fully upgraded. The Bundesliga has to be careful that we're not emptied out."
