With their squad looking set for an overhaul, Borussia Dortmund announced Thursday that midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has decided against renewing his contract.

Gundogan's contract is set to expire June 30, 2016, and his decision to avoid renewal will only add to speculation that Dortmund are set to sell him at the end of the season.

Earlier this week, sporting director Michael Zorc denied reports linking Gundogan with a €30-million move to Manchester United, saying: "Usually we won't comment on these countless rumours, but this story is so grotesque, and that's why we say this once: There is no signature, there is no offer, no request, and not even any contact.

"My last contact with Manchester United, and I say this openly and honestly, took place in November 2014 and was about something else entirely."

Through 19 Bundesliga appearances, Gundogan has three goals and three assists to his name. He returned to the pitch in October after a 14-month absence that stemmed from an inflamed nerve in his back which required surgery.
