Bayern Munich captures 25th Bundesliga title by virtue of Wolfsburg loss

The inevitable has been confirmed.

Bayern Munich, Pep Guardiola's beautiful, ruthless footballing machine - that was by far and away the best club in the Bundesliga this season - are officially the champions of Germany.

The Bavarian club captured their 25th Bundesliga crown on Sunday, and they didn't even have to step foot on the pitch to do so.

Bayern came into the day's slate of matches with an insurmountable, for all intents and purposes, 15-point advantage on second-placed Wolfsburg.

With the latter only having five matches remaining on their campaign, they simply could not afford to drop any more points if they hoped to reel in the reigning champions and pull off one of the most improbable runs to a league title in the history of the sport.

It sounded too good to be true. And so it proved to be.

The Wolves, so exciting all season long, were unable to collect all three points against Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday.

In fact, they came away with none, losing 1-0 and in doing so ensuring that Bayern Munich cannot be caught at the top of the table this season.

The dominant title victory is Bayern's third consecutive, and pushes them even further ahead of the rest of the pack for the all-time lead, with FC Nurnberg and their nine league crowns an exceedingly distant second.

Given that Nurnberg are not even in the top flight of German football at the moment, languishing in mid-table in the second division, that lead should only continue to grow.
