Decision on where Mats Hummels plays next season 'will only be taken by BVB'

Where in the world will Mats Hummels be playing in 2015-16?

The Borussia Dortmund centre-back's future remains clouded by uncertainty as the Bundesliga campaign approaches its end, particularly following a series of quotes that have emerged in the last week.

Hummels has been linked with a move to Manchester United ever since Louis van Gaal replaced David Moyes at Old Trafford, and he'll have two years left on his contract at the end of the season. In a recent interview with Kicker, Hummels admitted: "I think moving abroad would be good for my professional and personal well-being. Eventually, I'd like to leave the Bundesliga."

However, according to Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, the club holds the final say on whether Hummels is or isn't at the Westfalenstadion next season.

"In this moment, this a total dummy discussion, because there is no offer," Watzke said, according to the Guardian's Jamie Jackson. "If one arrives, we will discuss it internally and make a decision. But this decision will only be taken by BVB.

"The situation at Dortmund is like this: We've lost one major player each year, but we don't stop playing football. To be clear: Mats knows his contractual situation, he described it in that interview himself. The decision where Mats will play next season will only be taken by BVB."

United reportedly looked at acquiring Hummels during the January transfer window when their backline was riddled with injuries, but the move never materialized.

It's debatable just how much United would have to cough up to acquire him, although the Guardian reported in November that the transfer fee could be well above £32 million.
