Ghana's Rahman out of AFCON due to knee injury

Ghana will be without Baba Rahman for the remainder of the Africa Cup of Nations after a knee injury ruled the Schalke defender, on loan from Chelsea, out of the continental tournament.

The Ghana FA announced Thursday that Rahman will travel to Germany to undergo further tests.

Initial tests, however, revealed that the 22-year-old suffered a ruptured meniscus, as well as a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

"The Ghana medical team led by Dr. Adam Baba revealed that the defender suffered "a rupture of the meniscus and a particular tear of the anterior cruciate ligament with fluid collection in the left knee," the announcement read.

"A Ghana team official will accompany the defender on the journey to Germany on Thursday evening.

"The GFA will offer all the support to the dedicated and hardworking Baba Rahman on his road to recovery."

The GFA did not reveal a timetable for Rahman's return, but the left-back will likely undergo surgery, according to Liam Twomey from ESPN FC. Similar injuries have sidelined players for six to nine months, meaning Rahman is in danger of missing the remainder of the season.

Since joining Schalke in the summer, Rahman has appeared in 21 matches, including 13 Bundesliga matches.
