Germany adds 4th sub for extra-time domestic cup clashes

DFB

The German Football Federation (DFB) announced Friday that it will permit the introduction of a fourth substitute for domestic cup matches that go to extra time.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved the DFB's proposal adding an additional sub for all men's and women's DFB Pokal matches, according to a statement on the federation's website.

With the IFAB's approval, the change will kick in for the men's competition in the Round of 16 on Feb. 7 and 8, and on the women's side from the same stage on Dec. 2 to 4. The new rule will also be implemented on a full-time basis for the entirety of the 2016-17 competition.

"We are glad that all clubs see the athletic benefits of this scheme and have agreed to the change in the competition," DFB vice-president of football development Peter Frymuth said Friday.

He added, "Participation in the pilot project allows the practical assessment of the fourth substitution ... with a view to the benefits, but it is also possible to establish any negative effects with regard to the competition."

The trial will end following next season, but the change could eventually be adopted permanently.
