Team needs: 3 more moves Bayern Munich should make in the transfer window

If it's not broken, don't fix it: a mantra Carlo Ancelotti is sure to follow upon taking the Bayern Munich helm from Pep Guardiola this summer.

His Spanish predecessor led the giant to three straight Bundesliga titles and oversaw holistic improvements at the club. One thing nagged at the Allianz Arena support, however: no Champions League title.

Ancelotti has won one more European crown than Pep as a manager - albeit over a much longer time span - and offers tactical know-how, vast experience, and a sterling list of contacts throughout the football world.

With the aid of his chunky address book, here are three more moves Bayern should make in the summer transfer window:

Further backup for the flanks

Ancelotti cooled talk that he was keen on bringing Leroy Sane to Bavaria earlier this week, potentially allowing him to link up with Guardiola at Manchester City instead.

"Our team is very good. All positions are well-staffed. We don't need new players for this season," said Ancelotti.

But he might be wrong. FC Schalke 04's Sane is a phenomenal talent at 20 and, although Kingsley Coman and Douglas Costa are arguably much better, the young German could've remedied the repeated injury issues to Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. Robben was ruled out for six weeks with a groin problem sustained during a recent friendly at Lippstadt 08.

Potential targets: Gabriel Jesus (Palmeiras), Leroy Sane (FC Schalke 04)

Gotze's gone, but bolster the middle

Mario Gotze was surplus to requirements, and has returned to Borussia Dortmund. Scoring the winner in the 2014 World Cup final was never going to be matched, but it looked to begin a career which would see him wreak havoc on the continent.

Unfortunately, accusations over carrying an excessively weighty figure led Guardiola to direct the 24-year-old's posterior onto the substitutes' bench, and now Ancelotti has got rid of him altogether.

The signing of the Portuguese Euro 2016 breakout star Renato Sanches is one of the standout pieces of business this summer, and could allow the wandering eyebrow of Ancelotti to ponder a return to his old favourite from 1990s AC Milan: the 4-3-1-2.

Xabi Alonso could operate deep in the three with two of Arturo Vidal, Thiago Alcantara, and Sanches busying themselves on his side. In this system, however, someone would have to fulfill a Rui Costa-esque role.

Right now Bayern's forays forward are very flank-heavy, and signing a No. 10 could provide a valuable plan B.

Potential target: Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)

Defensive backup

The usage of David Alaba and Joshua Kimmich at centre-back may be unique to Guardiola, meaning a return to their respective positions either at full-back or in the midfield, but that would leave Ancelotti with little centre-half cover beyond Jerome Boateng and new signing Mats Hummels.

It's undoubtedly a stellar pairing in the middle of defence, but one that's been prone to spells in the treatment room. 2014-15 was a particularly troublesome season for Hummels, and he battled to be fit for Germany's Euro 2016 campaign. Boateng sustained an injury during the summer tournament, and the latest estimates are that he's unavailable until October.

There are sketchy rumours that Bayern is eyeing a potential move for Laurent Koscielny. The Frenchman is a vastly underrated defender; somehow, he helped Arsenal become the joint third-best backline in the Premier League last season despite being partnered by the erratic Gabriel Paulista or Per Mertesacker, who turns like a Land Rover with a flat tyre.

Potential target: Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus), Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal)
