Maybe it was because the early match had been so memorable, and the late match so comparatively forgettable, but ESPN's Tom Rinaldi mixed up his US Open finalists when concluding his on-court interview with Madison Keys on Thursday night.
Keys had just got done dusting CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2 in 66 tidy minutes, shortly after Sloane Stephens gutted out a taut, thrilling three-set win over Venus Williams. After the brief interview, Rinaldi announced to the crowd that Keys had punched her ticket to the final. Or at least, he meant to.
"Sloane Stephens," he boomed instead, "through to the US Open final!"
Not untrue, but not quite right.
