Filipe Luis suffers broken leg, will likely miss World Cup
Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis could miss the World Cup after the Brazilian suffered a broken leg during Thursday's Europa League win over Lokomotiv Moscow.
Although the Spanish side didn't reveal how long the left-back will be sidelined, his chances of recovering in time to feature for Brazil at the World Cup in Russia are expected to be slim considering that the tournament kicks off in less than three months.
A statement from Atletico read: "Filipe Luis underwent medical tests as soon as he arrived back in Madrid, confirming that he has broken his left leg."
Luis suffered the injury when he attempted to block a shot from Lokomotiv striker Eder an hour into Atletico's 5-1 win. After receiving treatment, he was carried off on a stretcher.
The 32-year-old was expected to be in consideration for a place in Brazil's team after previously winning 31 caps for the national squad. However, his role likely would've have been limited behind Brazil's preferred left-back option, Real Madrid defender Marcelo.
Lucas Hernandez, who received his first call-up to the French national team, is expected to deputise in Luis' absence after Atletico manager Diego Simeone brought him on to finish the match Thursday.
