Slovenia's Tina Maze wins giant slalom for second Sochi gold
At the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Slovenia's Tina Maze won a pair of silver medals. While that was impressive, she has taken her success to a whole new level in Sochi.
Maze won the women's giant slalom on Tuesday, giving her a second gold medal to go along with the one she won in the downhill on Wednesday. Maze had the fastest time in the first run and even though her second run was only the 11th fastest, it was still enough to put her on top of the podium.
Maze finished with a combined time of 2:36.87, that put her just seven one hundredths of a second ahead of Anna Fenninger of Austria who had to settle for silver. It's also the second Sochi medal for Fenninger after she took gold in Saturday's super-G.
Rounding out the podium was the 2010 giant slalom gold medalist, German Viktoria Rebensburg.
American Mikaela Shiffrin was fifth after the first run and was unable to improve on her position, finishing a half second behind Maze. Erin Mielzynski was the only Canadian to complete both runs and she ended up in 21st place with a combined time of 2:40.69.
