Brazilian Olympic skier unable to move limbs after crash
Brazilian aerial skier Lais Souza crashed during training in Utah on Monday, and now doctors say she is unable to move her arms or legs, via NBC's Olympic Talk.
The two-time Olympian was skiing in Park City in Summit County, Utah with coach Ryan Snow when she crashed. She is currently undergoing surgery on her cervical spine at the Hospital of the University of Utah.
"Lais will have a long recovery ahead," said Team Brasil doctor Antonio Marttos Jr., according to the Brazilian Olympic Committee, as translated by Google.
"At this time, we can not predict what will be [the] long-term prognosis. She is receiving excellent medical care and [the] medical team is doing everything that she has the best possible recovery."
According to the report, Souza is "awake and following commands" but is breathing with the assistance of a ventilation system.
The 25-year-old, who competed for Brazil at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, would have been the only Olympic gymnast to compete in Sochi.
