WADA suspends accreditation of Rio doping laboratory
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced Friday it has suspended the accreditation of the Brazilian Doping Control Laboratory in Rio de Janeiro due to the laboratory's non-conformance with international standards.
The specifics of the violation weren't disclosed.
The suspension is effective June 22. The Summer Olympics are set to begin in 42 days.
The suspension will prohibit the Rio laboratory from performing any anti-doping analyses on urine or blood samples. In the interim, samples that would have been tested at the laboratory will be transported to another WADA-accredited laboratory - presumably in a different country.
WADA says the suspension will remain in effect for six months or until WADA can confirm the laboratory is "operating optimally," according to the release announcing the suspension.
