But the United States coach was quick to sympathize with his hard-fought opponents, as Team Canada fell 5-4 in a shootout loss, doing so on home ice.
Following the U.S. victory, Motzko, who also coaches St. Cloud State University of the NCHC, was spotted offering his best to the Canadian squad, notably disappointed in their defeat.
A native of Minnesota, Motzko was a first-year coach at the world juniors.
