Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez says he's "just starting" as he eyes an unprecedented amount of goals for Mexico after drawing level with Jared Borgetti's scoring tally of 46.

The 28-year-old matched the Santos Laguna legend's record in an important 2-0 World Cup qualification win over Costa Rica on Friday night, keeping El Tri atop "the Hex" with seven points from a possible nine.

The shaven-headed Hernandez shared the all-time scoring honour with Borgetti with a smart scoop over Keylor Navas after seven minutes, leaving the Bayer Leverkusen frontman simultaneously juggling emotions of disbelief and characteristic determination on the final whistle.

"It's is very nice, but this is just starting, that's how I see it," Guadalajara product Hernandez told ESPN FC's Tom Marshall. "It helps my confidence to be level as the maximum scorer. It is something I never dreamed about or imagined, but the most important things is the result for the group."

Although Chicharito had few words to offer the media, FC Porto defender Miguel Layun saw how happy the ex-Manchester United man was in achieving the feat and revealed how important his presence is in the dressing room.

"He spreads energy and he's important in the emotional side of the group," said Layun. "Seeing him like that transmits to us and we hope he keeps achieving the objectives he has."

Mexico now travels to Port of Spain to take on Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday.
