New England Revolution midfielder Carles Gil was crowned the 2021 Major League Soccer MVP, the league announced Tuesday.

He becomes the first player from the New England Revolution to be named MVP since Taylor Twellman in 2005.

"I want to thank everyone who voted for me, everyone who works at the club, our coaching staff, our fans, and especially my teammates," Gil said in a statement. "Together, we achieved an unforgettable regular season."

Gil was one of the driving forces behind the Revolution's success in 2021, providing a league-leading 18 assists during the club's Supporters' Shield-winning season.

He also led the league with 117 key passes as the Revs secured the best season in the club's 26-year history with an MLS-record 73 points.

The Spanish playmaker received 52.07% of the weighted vote to finish ahead of Hany Mukhtar (11.8%) of Nashville SC and Joao Paulo (4.9%) of the Seattle Sounders.

Gil was also named this season's MLS Comeback Player of the Year after sitting out a majority of the 2020 campaign due to an Achilles injury.

The 29-year-old attacking midfielder joins David Villa (2016) and last season's winner Alejandro Pozuelo as the third Spanish player to win the Landon Donovan MVP Award.
