Greg Vanney has stepped down as Toronto FC's head coach and technical director, the club announced Tuesday.

Vanney, 46, led the team to its most decorated period of success, guiding TFC to a historic treble in 2017 that included the franchise's first MLS Cup crown.

"Thank you to all of the TFC staff and players for the incredible experiences we've shared together during this journey. I'm forever grateful to each of you," Vanney said.

"Lastly, to the TFC Fans. You're truly amazing, and the memories and emotions from our biggest nights together will be cherished."

Vanney is both the most successful and longest-tenured manager in TFC history, leading Toronto to the playoffs in five of his six full seasons with the club. He holds the club record for matches managed (250) and victories (112). Toronto had not qualified for the playoffs prior to Vanney's arrival.

Under Vanney, Toronto appeared in three MLS Cup finals in a four-year window, won the Canadian Championship on three occasions, and qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League final in 2018.

Vanney earned both the MLS Coach of the Year and CONCACAF Coach of the Year distinctions for his stellar 2017 campaign.

"Back in 2014, he took over the head coach duties for a team that had never made the playoffs and turned them into an MLS champion," club president Bill Manning said. "More than that, he is of high character and a great family man. I thank him for time well served for our club, his legacy here in Toronto is secure."

The American tactician could be linked with the vacant coaching position at LA Galaxy. Vanney, a former defender, enjoyed two spells with the five-time MLS Cup champs during his 15-year playing career.
