Former New York Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch may have just joined RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, but he hopes to return to North America to coach the United States national team one day.

Marsch stepped down as Red Bulls boss last week to take up a new role as assistant to returning Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick.

He follows past MLS coaches like Los Angeles FC chief Bob Bradley in taking on a European challenge, but admits his long-term ambitions remain closer to home.

"I hope that I can one day also coach the USMNT," he said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Stephan Uersfeld. "But I am still young, there is still a lot to learn."

The 44-year-old enjoyed marked success in New Jersey, winning the MLS Supporters Shield in 2015 and reaching the CONCACAF Champions League with the club. However, Marsch felt he had to make the switch to Germany to further his career.

"It's the next step for me. Ralf is an intelligent coach with a fantastic philosophy. Our alignment is very good and my role is clear. I can help with my experience and also learn a lot at the same time," he said.

Though Marsch never saw himself as a candidate this time around - "there were no talks," he clarified - the U.S. is currently looking for a new head coach. Bruce Arena resigned in October after the nation failed to qualify for a World Cup for the first time since 1986.
