Arsenal shut out of Europa League Squad of the Season
UEFA announced the Europa League Squad of the Season on Thursday a day after Atletico Madrid won the tournament for the third time in nine years, and there's one team noticeably absent from the 18-man roster.
Semi-finalist Arsenal recorded the most wins and goals in the continent's second-tier tourney before falling one stage short of the final, but not a single Gunner was named to the end-of-season pool.
Aaron Ramsey might have been a decent shout with a quartet of goals in a half-dozen appearances including a stellar showing in the last-eight first leg versus CSKA Moscow. Fellow omission Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz also had a good showing with a tournament-best eight goals in 10 outings.
Los Colchoneros and their final foe Marseille are well represented, with six and three honourees respectively, as is embattled Portuguese outfit Sporting CP, with a trio of players featuring despite the club getting bounced at the quarter-final stage by eventual champion Atleti.
Here's the full 18-man squad:
GK: Jan Oblak (Atletico), Rui Patricio (Sporting CP)
DF: Leonardo Bonucci (AC Milan), Diego Godin (Atletico), Stefan Lainer (Red Bull Salzburg), Luiz Gustavo (Marseille), Bouna Sarr (Marseille)
MF: Bruno Fernandes (Sporting CP), Naby Keita (RB Leipzig), Koke (Atletico), Saul Niguez (Atletico), Gabi (Atletico), Diadie Samassekou (Salzburg)
FW: Gelson Martins (Sporting CP), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico), Ciro Immobile (Lazio), Dimitri Payet (Marseille), Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)
