Dortmund eliminated from Europa League after 2nd-leg stalemate

Borussia Dortmund must wave goodbye to its Europa League hopes for the 2017-18 season, as the club failed to progress into the quarter-finals with a 2-1 aggregate loss to Red Bull Salzburg in the round of 16.

The German outfit lost by that 2-1 scoreline in the opening leg at the Westfalenstadion, and was held to a 0-0 draw at Red Bull Arena on Thursday.

Valon Berisha scored both goals in the initial encounter, ultimately proving to be the difference as Dortmund couldn't find the precious goal it needed to overturn the deficit, nor the follow-up needed to overcome Salzburg's away-goal advantage.

It's the first time Dortmund has failed to score an away goal since last September, and just the second time this season that the team recorded only one shot in the first half of a match.

Salzburg's success also finished off a solid week of results for the Red Bull organization, as RB Leipzig advanced past Zenit St. Petersburg in the Europa League, while the New York Red Bulls defeated Tijuana in the CONCACAF Champions League.
