CAF to announce new Cup of Nations host after Morocco pulls out over Ebola fears
A new host for the 2015 African Cup of Nations will soon be announced. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has acknowledged Morroco's request not to host the tournament due to its fears over the spread of the Ebola virus.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation was dealt a severe blow Tuesday when their request to postpone the tournament was met with the harsh decision by the CAF to banish the country altogether for its refusal to host the tournament on the dates specified by the governing body.
CAF president Issa Hayatou has yet to announce which countries are being considered to host the tournament on short notice, but says a decision will be made in two to three days, according to ESPNFC.
"We have not had the time to get in touch with these federations to try to define the contours of the organisation," Hayatou told France 24. "Therefore, I cannot tell you where it will be played. All I can tell you is that it will take place somewhere."
While they haven't contacted possible candidates, the CAF is reviewing applications from various countries that expressed an interest in hosting during the bidding process before Morocco was selected.
The CAF chose Morocco to host the 2015 African Cup of Nations in 2011, as the northern African country beat out several countries. Botswana, Cameroon, Congo DR, Guinea, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe saw their bids fail, but may be considered as a replacement for the upcoming tournament.
However, one surprising report emerged Wednesday that might see the tournament take place in a different continent.
