It was a slog, but Portugal became the latest side to secure a spot at Euro 2020.

The reigning European champion beat Luxembourg 2-0 on Sunday, overcoming both the feisty host nation and shoddy pitch at the Stade Josy Barthel to join Ukraine in advancing from Group B.

The Selecao looked shaky for much of the opening half, but a fine low strike from Bruno Fernandes in the 39th minute appeared to settle the nerves somewhat, allowing Fernando Santos' men to notch the three points needed to ensure they'll defend their title.

Cristiano Ronaldo racked up his 99th international goal in the waning minutes, poking the ball into an open net to cement the victory. The tally was officially credited to the Juventus star, even though Diogo Jota's initial shot appeared to have already crept just over the line.

There was a chance heading into Sunday's action for Serbia to leapfrog Portugal for second place in the group and earn an automatic qualifying berth. The Serbians needed to beat Ukraine in their concurrent match, and hope Luxembourg could secure at least a point against Portugal.

However, neither result came to fruition, with Serbia only mustering a 2-2 draw. They'll now have to go through the qualifying playoffs to reach next summer's tournament.
