Empoli signs veteran striker Gilardino to 2-year contract
Empoli completed the signing of World Cup winner Alberto Gilardino on Thursday, bringing in the 34-year-old veteran from Palermo on a two-year contract.
Gilardino had one year left on his deal with the Rosanero, but apparent complications with Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini forced the former AC Milan and Fiorentina striker to consider a new path.
In a long Twitter message earlier in the week, Gilardino expressed to the fans the decision to leave wasn't his.
He added, "You have supported me and encouraged me for the whole season, and I always felt your love. I've been very struck by the great demonstration of affection you've shown me on banners and social media, and I am truly grateful."
Gilardino scored 10 goals to help Palermo stave off relegation from Serie A last campaign.
He will now join Massimo Maccarone in an experienced front line for Empoli. Free transfer Manuel Pasqual, who played with Gilardino at Fiorentina, will also reunite with his former teammate.
Gilardino is currently second among active all-time Serie A scorers with 188 goals.
