Mission accomplished: Cagliari returns to Serie A
Cagliari Calcio continues to bounce between Italian football's top two divisions.
On Friday, almost one year to the day since Cagliari was relegated from Serie A, the club secured an immediate return to the top flight, earning a 3-0 victory at Bari that ensured Massimo Rastelli's side can finish no lower than second in the Serie B standings.
Needing only one point to confirm its place in Serie A's next season, Cagliari wasted no time at the Stadio Nicola, as Joao Pedro opened the scoring within 24 minutes before Diego Farias and Alberto Cerri each tallied a second-half goal.
Tommaso Giulini, Cagliari's president, took to Twitter after the final whistle, writing: "It was painful, but today - with passion, sweat and pride - we can say: mission accomplished."
Also quick to express his happiness at Cagliari's promotion was AS Roma's Radja Nainggolan, who spent four years on the island of Sardinia, Italy, and wrote: "Back where it belongs."
