Hellas Verona relegated to Serie B
There will be no miracle at Hellas Verona this season.
Despite producing an improbable 2-1 victory over AC Milan on Monday, Verona became the first casualty in Serie A this season hours later, as Carpi's 1-0 win at home to Empoli confirmed the Gialloblu will spend the 2016-17 campaign in Serie B.
Verona, at the bottom of the Serie A standings with only 25 points through 35 matchdays, achieved the impossible back in 1984-95, coming out of nowhere to win the top flight of Italian football at a time when Diego Maradona was at Napoli, Michel Platini was at Juventus, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was at Internazionale, Falcao was at AS Roma, and Zico was at Udinese. The Gialloblu had Antonio Di Gennaro, but it was, simply put, a phenomenal accomplishment.
Unfortunately for Verona and the unfashionable provincial club's supporters, any hope of repeating those scenes will have to wait as the club must first figure out how a return to Serie A can be ensured.
