CSKA Moscow batter Real Madrid at Bernabeu; still finish bottom of group

After beating Julen Lopetegui's version of Real Madrid on home soil, CSKA Moscow humbled Santiago Solari's edition with a 3-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu in Group G of the Champions League on Wednesday.

However, the achievement wasn't enough to earn CSKA a spot in the Europa League, as Viktoria Plzen pinched third place to reach the continent's secondary competition thanks to a concurrent 2-1 triumph over Roma. The Italian club finished second despite suffering its third defeat of the group stage.

Viktor Goncharenko's CSKA side, which is positioned third in the Russian Premier League, eked a 1-0 win over the reigning European champions in October when Nikola Vlasic preyed on a woeful backpass from Toni Kroos.

This time, the club intelligently carved out its own openings in the Spanish capital, bagging three unanswered strikes through Fedor Chalov, Georgi Schennikov, and Arnor Sigurdsson.

Chalov's 37th-minute opener - a swerving finish after the 20-year-old evaded some half-hearted challenges from Los Blancos - befitted the prestigious arena, and the two goals that followed on either side of the interval were also well-worked moves.

The result marked the first time Real Madrid lost home and away to the same opponent in the group stage since the 2008-09 campaign. Solari did rotate his lineup for CSKA's visit, but decorated professionals such as Karim Benzema, Marcelo, Isco, and Marco Asensio were among those shamed on home turf. Boos rang out when the final whistle sounded.
