Mississippi State head coach Joe Moorhead announced that quarterback Nick Fitzgerald has been suspended for the team's season opener Saturday against Stephen F. Austin, via Mike Bratton of Saturday Down South.
According to Moorhead, the suspension is a result of violating team rules in March.
The specifics of the redshirt senior's rule violation have yet to be disclosed, but it appears the ban will last just one game.
Fitzgerald starred for the Bulldogs in 2016 before his production took a hit last year. He completed 55.6 percent of his passes for 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He added 984 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground.
With Fitzgerald out, sophomore Keytaon Thompson will be under center for Mississippi State Week 1.
